Builders, Counties Partner to Promote Common Interests
Since 2001, Executive Vice President and CEO Jerry Howard has led NAHB in a series of issue-centered dialogues in partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo). The partnership's purpose is to highlight areas where local cooperation benefits both groups, particularly in these fiscally challenging times for state and local governments.

Key benefits already derived from joint efforts between NAHB and NACo include:

  • United opposition to the Community Character Act
  • Helping shape APA’s Legislative Guidebook
  • Developing meaningful brownfields reform

The partnership has been successful on the federal level, but Howard and NACo President Kenneth Mayfield say that cooperation between builders and county officials at the local level will be the true barometer of the partnership’s success. Those important local issues include paying for new infrastructure, preserving open space and working to adopt the ICC Building Code.
