California
The San Diego area's population is growing in leaps and bounds — from 3 million to 3.9 million by 2030, leading the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to call for  public input in a proposed regional comprehensive plan.

The plan — the first of its kind — will boost housing construction from 300,0000 to 400,000 units, bring together land use, transportation and other services among SANDAG, and redistribute the area's half-cent transportation tax to provide incentives for "smart growth."

Georgia
A recent study conducted in the Greater Atlanta region concluded that adopting certain smart growth policies can help the area accommodate another two million people by 2030. The smart growth measures could also cut time spent in traffic congestion from 36 minutes to 33 minutes, and preserve 107,000 acres of open space.

The study, conducted by URS Corp. for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. The group expects the findings to help Gov. Sonny Perdue create the necessary financial incentives to implement the measures.
